Running with Family for Family
In May 2009, Nell Ryan lost her father to a combination of Melanoma and Chronic Leukemia Lymphoma. This year, Ryan and seven of her siblings were hoping to run the New York Marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Race day was scheduled to be November 4th, Nell was planning to run 26.2 miles. The family was hoping to raise $26K – just over $3,700 each.
“It’s a tall order, we know,” said Ryan, “but Dad was a particularly tall man and had the biggest smile. The void he left is immeasurable, so we thought aiming high was appropriate.”

Being Green
The movement to go green made a big splash in the early 2000’s but has faded in the past few years. Yet, some still think it is important to be environmentally conscious, and have made this a priority both at their jobs and in their communities.
“I think if you pick your head up out of the sand, you can’t help but notice that we’re making an impact on our environment every day, and I think we owe it to ourselves and to our children to pay attention to what we are doing,” said environmentally conscious Matthew Hopkins, the owner and creative director at 360 Events.
While events management and the environment may not appear to have anything in common, Hopkins has chosen to spend the extra time and energy to create events in a way that is both socially and environmentally responsible.
The eco-friendly entrepreneur, who spends long hours creating luxurious weddings, fashion shows and gala dinners at venues like the Lincoln Center, gives a lot of the material he uses a second life.
“Once the events are over, we make sure the material we have used doesn’t end up in the waste stream,” he said.
He donates the items to Materials for the Art, an organization that receives approximately $7 million worth of unused material and has become the largest provider of arts supplies to the New York City public school system.
“Being eco-friendly is a very complex challenge but we believe that little by little we are making a difference in our environment,” said a hopeful Hopkins.
